Three lanes of traffic, one for animals in black stone and two for people in white, a measured width calculated precisely so that animals can turn with their massive load and more than 1,000 cobbled steps that smoothly cover an elevation difference of 250 metres. The ladder was constructed by local stone craftsmen in order to connect the villages. This was until 1974 when the present road was opened. It was built with dry stones (stones placed one on top of the other), consists of 39 bends, has an extension of 1500m, has 1100 steps and covers an altitude difference of 250m.
The staircase climbs up one side of the gorge of Mezaria, a gorge that joins the gorge of Vikos. The slope is joined to the opposite slope by two small stone one-arch bridges built especially for the staircase.
