Live Report of Fentanyl-Related Substances
This live report lists all samples containing fentanyl and fentanyl-related substances (FRS), a class of synthetic opioids and related compounds analyzed by the UNC Street Drug Analysis lab.
Suggested reading: Wilde et al. "Metabolic Pathways and Potencies of New Fentanyl Analogs" in Frontiers in Pharmacology.
Note: percentages add up to more than 100% because each sample can contain more than one FRS.
Overlap Between FRS
In what percent of samples was a FRS detected but not fentanyl?
More than 99% of FRS-containing samples also contained illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Carfentanil was the only major substance found separately from fentanyl, details in our separate tracker. The two most common non-fentanyl FRS are para-fluorofentanyl and despropionyl p-fluorofentanyl, the latter just a byproduct of the other. The third most common, norfentanyl, is much less potent than fentanyl.

FRS Locations Detected
📍 A note on geography. Seeing more samples from one location doesn't mean that that location is seeing more of this substance than other places. These are early days, and programs are preferentially sending us samples that they think might contain unexpected or novel opioids. We analyze more samples from NC, NY, WA, MI, OR, CA, NM, PA, CO, FL, and OH. There are plenty of places we don't get samples from, so not seeing a state on this list doesn't mean FRS are not present locally.
