The latest report published by ACEA ( European Automobile Manufacturers Association ) , notes that the majority of electric vehicle charging points in Europe do not offer fast charging , apart from being insufficient in number.

ACEA is drawing the attention of governments to these two important problems, which risk blocking the spread of electric vehicles. Six countries in the European Union do not have a single charging point per 100 km of road. 17 countries have fewer than five charging points per 100 km of road and only five countries on the Old Continent have more than 10 charging points per 100 km.

Furthermore, there is a huge difference between the countries with the most chargers per 100 km of road and those with the least. For example, the Netherlands has one station for every 1.5 km of road, while Poland, which is eight times larger, has only one ride-on electric car charger for every 150 km. Photo: Shutterstock

Charging speed is also an important issue on the Old Continent, as fast chargers (with capacities above 22 kW) make up a small fraction of the total. In fact, ACEA claims that only one in seven of all European charging points is fast. Everything else has a capacity of 22kW or less and there cannot charge EVs at an acceptable speed.

Sigrid de Vries , CEO of ACEA, says: " If we are to convince citizens across Europe to switch to electric mobility in the next decade, charging these cars must be as easy as refuelling is today. People do not have to travel miles to find a charger, nor do they have to wait hours to charge their car. We ask Members to vote for decisive action on infrastructure pricing next week, setting ambitious infrastructure targets - with clear enforcement mechanisms - for every Member State." As for Bulgaria, surprisingly or not, we are not the laggards in this respect. We have more electric car charging stations per 100 kilometres of road than countries like the Czech Republic, Spain, Greece, etc. In other words, in terms of the construction of charging stations, Bulgaria is in the so-called 'golden environment' among the countries of Europe, and yet these stations are far from sufficient in our country too.
